Backpack Safety tips for parents
A new school year is approaching and it is important to prioritize your child’s health to ensure a healthy education experience. An overlooked health issue for school-aged children is backpack safety. Young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the use of overweight backpacks is a contributing factor, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).
The doctors at Flint Hills Family Chiropractic, LLC often see many children who carry their backpacks incorrectly, putting them at a higher risk of developing a [functional] scoliosis. Children should be checked yearly for scoliosis and periods of rapid growth, like puberty, are especially important to monitor.
“Scoliosis can ultimately lead to pain and discomfort in the back and chest, and in severe cases may contribute to lung and heart problems,” according to chiropractors, Dr. Lauren Palmer and Dr. Jessica Campbell.
